REVIEW: The Further Adventures of Antoine Feval

Seeing Chris Gibbs in action is like hiring a really good trainer to kick your ass into shape. Except Gibbs is all about pummelling the cheeks on your face via a skillful one-two punch of rapid-fire storytelling and comedic asides. In fact, much of what makes The Further Adventures of Antoine Feval so great is the brilliance of these asides, which are sometimes so absurd it takes a moment to recalculate what the eff is going on, meaning that there's a lot of delighted, even if sometimes delayed, laughter.I loved his one-man show last year, based on the same bumbling Victorian-era character and his "adventures" with a criminal who claims to be a Sherlock Holmes-like detective. The new show doesn't quite have the same flow to its plot (not uncommon in sequels, as we all know), but that leaves room for more characters to jump in (all played by Gibbs, of course) and more space for the even more absurd long-game jokes. This time around, I also felt I knew Gibbs better - not in terms of what to expect, but in that I had faith in him to make it through the 75-minute show and leave my cheeks in satisfied pain by the end. That he loves every minute of it too makes the wild journey even more enjoyable. The Further Adventures of Antoine Feval, June 20 (today!) at 2:45 at 60 Rachel W.
